Education programs

Five educational programs are being implemented at the PhE Faculty, four of which are master's programs. Bachelor Program is a classical physical education, which, on the one hand, will serve as a basis for special areas of science, and on the other hand, it will be a complete toolkit for an engineer. Master students purposefully study photonics, nanotechnology and also metamaterials. The program on metamaterials is unique and the one of its kind in Russia and includes classical electrodynamics and optics as well as modern aspects of development of these areas of science.

Nanophotonics and metamaterials

Program description
Educational program "Nanophotonics and metamaterials" is the only one in Russia and one of the few programs in the world that combines training in nanophotonics, nanotechnology and metamaterials. Students studying at the program become full participants of advanced research of new optical materials, methods of optical control and interaction of light with matter. Employees of the international center of SIC Nanophotonics and Metamaterials and international research laboratories are actively involved in the implementation of the program. Starting from the second semester students’ training is divided into 2 tracks (specializations): theoretical and experimental nanophotonics.

Radiofrequency systems and devices

Program description
Educational program "Radio Frequency Systems and Devices" is aimed at training creative developers and researches working in the field of modern radio data transmission, communications, medical diagnostics, and navigation. The competitive advantage of our graduates is a deep knowledge of radio science with a high level of knowledge of the latest methods of calculation, computer simulation and prototyping of antennas, digital and analog high-frequency devices. During training, students acquire their skills by actively participating in advanced research and development in the field of new types of antennas and devices for applications such as 5G, wireless power transfer, MRI, GNSS, RFID, etc. Our students carry out these projects together with colleagues from leading international research centers and companies, many of which are also involved in the educational process. As a result, by the time of the Master's Degree defense, our graduates occupy a worthy place in the community of radio engineers and scientists and can choose between continuing their postgraduate studies and working for leading companies in the industry.

Semiconductor physics

Program description
"Physics of semiconductors" is a joint master's educational program of ITMO University and the Ioffe Institute. Teachers of the program form a unique team of leading employees of Ioffe Institute, ITMO University, St Petersburg Academic University.
Teachers of the program - theorists and experimenters of the world level, who are active in scientific activity, are published in high-rated physical journals, their original lecture courses reflect the latest scientific achievements. Our educational program will provide students with fundamental knowledge and competitiveness in the rapidly developing field of creation, research and theoretical description of macro -, micro-and nano - semiconductor and dielectric structures.

Quantum materials

Program description
The main objective of this program is to train masters specializing in quantum physics with an emphasis on quantum mechanical modeling of new materials and low-dimensional systems. The program includes two possible educational trajectories: computer simulation of functional materials and physics of low-dimensional structures. These are actual directions of research of modern science, which determines the demand for graduates. The program combines courses such as quantum physics, materials science, applied mathematics and physics of nanostructures. Educational program "Quantum materials" is implemented in close coordination with other educational programs of the PhE faculty: Nanophotonics and metamaterials and Semiconductor physics.
