Opto- and acoustomechanics

 

Light and acoustics waves can trap small objects! This surprising technique is extremely gentle with the object of interest, for example it is possible to study biological cells without introducing too much harm to them. In our group we study the fundamental principles of such effects. Deep down net force and torque arise from the linear and angular momentum conservation laws. Interestingly, it is also possible to rotate trapped particles, which exhibit a rotational symmetry breaking.

Non-destructive particle field manipulation opens up many new possibilities, which find their place in fundamental research and biological applications.
